Ethereal, hypnotic, dizzying, gripping, lush, oceanic, driving, cinematic, haunting… these are good words to describe A Waking Ghost Inside, the debut release from San Francisco-based Mercury’s Antennae. Comprised of vocalist Dru Allen (This Ascension, Mirabilis) and multi-instrumentalist Erick R. Scheid (Translucia), the band’s sound is distinctly reminiscent of ‘90s-era Projekt acts. Ranging from the heavy moodiness and guitar drone of Lycia to the unadorned acoustic beauty of Love Spirals Downwards to the passionate rock of This Ascension, the duo also draws on ambient and tribal influences, contemporary electronica, the sweet melodic pop of 4AD, and the blissful guitar noise of bands like Curve.
Guitarist/instrumentalist Scheid co-founded the band Translucia in 1994. After appearing on the Cocteau Twins tribute Half Gifts on the now defunct Dewdrops label, Translucia were signed to Toronto’s Plan 11 label, which released two albums. Allen has studied and performed rock, heavenly voices, classical and world music for over 25 years. Best known for fronting the darkwave act This Ascension she is also one-half of the neo-classical, heavenly voices band Mirabilis.
The two met in 2010 at a fateful Lovespirals show. Scheid, recognizing Allen from her work with This Ascension, approached her with the idea to collaborate on music. An enduring connection formed as Allen gave voice to a number of instrumentals Scheid had previously recorded. Other compositions came to life, spontaneously conceived as the two jammed with acoustic guitar and voice. They each brought their own unique approach to songwriting; Allen’s soaring, multilayer vocals fused with Scheid’s electronic experimentation and trusty guitars to create songs of rarified style, power and grace.
The title A Waking Ghost Inside refers to the spark within each of us, the impulse to create and discover the innate energy that unites us with immeasurable realms beyond. As humans, we experience a sense of longing to connect to oneself on a much deeper level. In our search we catch glimpses of other possibilities of life and spirit. A Waking Ghost Inside sonically explores these themes and the potential to awaken one’s own authentic self.
Fans of darkwave, heavenly voices and spacious atmospheres will find themselves at home within these 77 minutes: it’s an alchemy of harmonic, swirling guitars, lush, glimmering instrumentation, and Dru’s dream-felt and sirenic vocals.
A Waking Ghost Inside was released April 22, 2014, coinciding with Mercury’s Antennae’s first ever West Coast tour. It sold out on February 23, 2016.

A collaborative project between vocalist Dru Allen (This Ascension, Mirabilis) and multi-instrumentalist Erick R. Scheid (Translucia), Mercury’s Antennae’s music is ethereally attuned and pantheist in scope. A 4AD influence is felt on the duo’s debut album, A Waking Ghost Inside, which recalls, to various degrees, the music of This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Dance, and Cocteau Twins. Released on the Projekt label, the band’s sound also brings to mind such darkwave/gothic Projekt bands as Love Spirals Downwards and Lycia. Yet another influence is the visionary music of Hildegard von Bingen. Ever the siren, Allen’s evocative vocals are wrapped in the lush, Tangerine Dream-evoking instrumentation of Scheid, drawing listeners like sailors to the rocks — only instead of being dashed against them one feels soothingly entranced and healed. On “The Way You Purr” the sibylline Allen chants: “Long withstanding soul / Wishes to come home / I am here / No feeling down again / You were the light / You were right / Now, here now / It’s time / We were formed by pieces and I came… / I came / Hope’s a sail.”
The underlying premise of the album seems to be to kindle the divine spark — to “wake the ghost” — inside each individual, and in so doing to realize a taste of the divine nature and to feel the sublimity of Nature’s divinity. On “City of Moving Clouds,” Allen’s lissome voice is carried on high via Scheid’s swirling guitars as she sings: “Just breathe / We aren’t doubting / High aloft, feel the pulse / Of this city / For who you are, you’ll feel me / Wherever you are, just be / Clouds have come to carry us tonight.” Perhaps the most moving track is “Where Tides Softly Gaze,” on which Allen chants through Scheid’s sonic waves: “See what has come / Whispers bring moon and sun / Fate ne’er undone / Others sought, away did go / On our way / O’ for long to the Sun / And where tides softly gaze.” On the whole, A Waking Ghost Inside is subtly textured, mystic dream pop, which helps the listener temporarily transcend a quotidian existence and feel a fleeting bliss. -Sean Mageean

A chi avesse seguito da vicino la proficua e massiccia ondata dream-pop californiana degli anni Novanta – capeggiata, manco a dirlo, dalla stessa Projekt che oggi dà alle stampe questo disco – il nome dei This Ascension suonerà tutt’altro che nuovo. Di quell’universo di realtà in continuo movimento e pronte a ramificarsi in mille side-project, l’orchestrina guidata dalla limpida ugola di Dru Allen fu tra le più abili nel miscelare le due correnti principali del sound made in Usa, ovvero quella eterea di scuola Cocteau Twins (spesso mischiata a sussurri post-shoegaze) e quella gotica imperniata su trame neoclassiche portata dai Black Tape For A Blue Girl alla sua massima espressione.
Come molte delle esperienze del periodo, quella dei This Ascension fu una storia tutto sommato breve e non particolarmente produttiva a livello quantitativo, ma il suo “tassello” ricopre una posizione di rilievo in quella gigantesca scacchiera che sopravvive tutt’oggi grazie a eredi quasi mai in grado (gli Autumn’s Grey Solace non sono che l’eccezione) di rinvigorire un verbo già di per sé piuttosto difficile da sviluppare. Non stupisce troppo, quindi, che Dru Allen torni in campo a quasi quindici anni dalla fine dell’act – a cui la cantante avrebbe fatto seguire un’esperienza totalmente diversa come Mirabilis – al fianco di una spalla decisamente meno nota come Erick Scheid (un disco all’attivo con i Translucia).
A Waking Ghost Inside è dunque un’immersione in quei suoni che si sono nel tempo legati al marchio Projekt grazie a interpreti di lusso come i vari Lycia e Love Spirals Downwards sul fronte etereo e Lovesliescrushing su quello più tagliente. Un pezzo come “The Way You Purr” potrebbe tranquillamente racchiudere una sintesi della purezza tanto quanto delle (pesanti e palesi) influenze alla base dell’album, il cui pregio maggiore sta proprio in un songwriting suggestivo e sapiente. A svettare già dal primo ascolto è una netta divisione del lavoro in due parti: la prima, decisamente più Twinsiana, si snoda fra deliziose miniature strumentali e altri numeri cristallini come la pastorale “The Guides” e “Agalia”, sorretta da uno scarno scheletro elettronico.
Nella seconda, invece, trovano spazio quelle idee più legate al post-shoegaze già espresse nell’introduzione spettrale di “An Offering” e nella nebbia che avvolge “City Of Moving Clouds”: la temperatura scende e il sogno s’infittisce dando vita alla desolazione di “Elendil” e all’isolamento ermetico diluito con zucchero di “Where Tides Softly Gaze”, fino a giungere agli abissi della title track e al cielo stellato di “Seconds Before Sunrise”.
A prendere forma sono anche numeri più inquieti, come l’apoteosi soft-noise in due parti di “Nepenthe” e “The Sweet Scent Of Rain” e la bella chiusura fra le onde di “Le Chant Dès Sirenes”. Un compito svolto alla perfezione, ma con quell’arma in più capace di fare la differenza quando si parla di atmosfera: l’esperienza. Rating: 7 (very good) -Matteo Meda

Další zasněný debut přináší na scénu americký label Projekt records. Tentokrát od dvojice Mercury’s Antennae. Už rozpitý obal desky A Waking Ghost Inside, který překrývá několik vrstev fotografií, leccos naznačuje. A při zjištění, že duo tvoří skladatel Erick R. Scheid (Translucia) a zpěvačka Dru Delmonico (This Ascension, Mirabilis), už je modrým docela jasné, co mohou od Mercury’s Antennae očekávat. Oba dva protagonisté totiž v minulosti tvořili spíše zasněnou kytarovou muziku, která si hrstmi brala ze studnice průkopníků, jakými jsou Cocteau Twins nebo Slowdive. Jejich debut je napřímen přesně tímto směrem, kde se pohybují například Lycia, Chandeen nebo v současné době radikálně metamorfovaní Alcest. Třešínkou na dortu je každopádně ornamentální vokál Dru, který zasazen do jemného kytarově-elektronického přediva, přidává hudbě Mercury’s Antennae specifický odstín. -Pavel Zelinka

It is great to be introduced to great new projects in the ethereal shoegaze scene as well as be reunited in a way with former favorite artists. This band is a welcome addition and many people here will recognize the name of Dru Allen and her work with This Ascension, Falling You and Mirabilis, all of which continue to get airplay here. The other half of this project is the talented multi-intrumentalist Erick R. Scheid who also has a past with the group Translucia. After meeting in 2010, the two began collaborating and we now have the masterpiece debut album that is a result of this work together. The music is an excellent collaboration of ambient electronics and soaring guitars as the backdrop to Dru’s heavenly vocals. Fans of Love Spirals Downwards and Lycia will love the music from this project.
From the first moment I heard teaser tracks from this band, I knew I was hooked. I’ve been a fan of the aforementioned bands for many years. One of my first exposures to ethereal heavenly voices was with Love Spirals Downwards and on more of the rock side to This Ascension. This album brings together all of the best elements from these projects and styles and the band puts their own touch on it all for a truly captivating album. With sixteen tracks, there is some great material here which was surprising with so many bands just releasing small 3 or 4 track EP’s at first. This was a real pleasant surprise to have a true full-length album to sit down and cuddle up with, to enjoy to it’s fullest as the reverberating soundscapes and heavenly vocals carress the listener wave after wave.
The perfection begins right from the start with the introduction to the album in the form of “An Offering”. The soft and soothing, yet distorted guitars and electronic ambient sounds build and grow, morphing and moving slowly until fading out and giving way to the soft, sweet strumming guitar of “The Guides”. The acoustic nature of this piece makes it soft and slow, a perfect back-drop as Dru’s vocals join for a great mix. With these pieces the listener starts to get a taste of what’s in store over the next hour from this album. It has so much to offer and the listener just has to sit back and close their eyes and relax, enjoy the captivating sounds of Mercury’s Antennae.
After listening to the album a few times, a few tracks stood out to me as absolutely captivating and favorite pieces. The entire album is spellbinding and beautiful, with the ambient interludes that come interspersed throughout the album. The structure of the album makes it such that listening from start to finish is ideal. However, to pick out a few tracks, such as I did for the Ethereal Mix radio show, a few stand out on their own very well. The first of these is “The Way You Purr”. Like the previous track, the acoustic slow-strummed guitar is present, but with added reverb and with additional backing electronics. A soft and somber beat is added, just enough to make the listener sway and slowly move, and the guitar varies from verse to chorus creating a soaring climax that shoegaze fans will love. This all forms a beautiful audio tapestry interwoven together perfectly as a back-drop to Dru’s angelic vocals. The layers of elecronics, guitars and vocals all come together to perfection across this piece as I find myself listening to it over and over again. A little bit later on the album we’re presented with another true gem in “City of Moving Clouds”. All of the powerful and beautiful elements previously described come together again on this piece, yet creating a slightly different ambience and distinct piece. The strumming guitar is simple without as much reverb, though that definitely kicks in as the piece moves along. The soaring affects launch the listener into the ether, floating softly over the morphing electronics and guitars as Dru’s vocals carress and form a sort of instrument on their own. Other tracks with similar style and beauty that are noteworthy come in the form of the “Elendil” or “The Sweet Scent of Rain” and the finale to the album “Le Chant des Sirenes”.
Fans of ambient, ethereal and shoegaze, don’t hesitate, go out and pick up this album. This is a great new classic, something treasured and definitely a great gem and addition to our collection here. Rating: 4.5/5 -Jacob

È dall’incontro fra la cantante Dru Allen (Mirabilis, This Ascension) ed il polistrumentista Erick R. Scheid (Translucia) ad un concerto dei Lovespirals nel 2010 che sono state gettate le basi per il progetto Mercury’s Antennae, giunto finalmente al suo debutto ufficiale con l’album in esame (racchiuso in un gradevole eco-wallet completo di booklet in stile mini-poster e limitato a soli 300 esemplari). Non poteva essere che la Projekt l’etichetta più adatta ad offrire asilo al duo di San Francisco, giustamente accostato dalle note ufficiali a nomi che hanno contribuito alla grandezza della label americana come Lycia e Love Spirals Downwards, oltre che agli stessi This Ascension in cui militò Dru ed alla scuola 4AD più pop-oriented.
Un debutto in cui confluiscono tutte le migliori influenze eteree, dream-pop, ambient e shoegaze, vicino allo spirito degli anni d’oro anche a livello di produzione, con la voce della Allen (singer molto dotata ma avulsa da certe velleità perfezioniste, e quindi più genuina nei risvolti emozionali) libera di spaziare ed abbracciare varianti di pregio sullo sfuggente tessuto strumentale creato da Erick, alle prese con basso (elettrico e synth), chitarre, programming ed elettronica. Voce e chitarra sono le colonne portanti dell’opera, che però si ritaglia spazi per flebili folate ambientali con cinque brevi momenti sparsi fra le varie song, queste spesso e volentieri ‘spruzzate’ di un’elettronica che corrobora la parte ritmica. Un disco essenziale nelle strutture nonostante la densa stratificazione sonora, ora più acustico (“The Guides”, l’appassionata “Where Tides Softly Gaze”), ora vicino alle vibranti magie shoegaze degli indimenticati Cocteau Twins (“The Way You Purr”, l’ariosa e affascinante “Agalia”, la dolce e appassionata “Elendil” e il magnetico strumentale “Nepenthe”), quando non addirittura elettrico ed acceso (“The Sweet Scent Of Rain”).
La mestizia della sei corde evolve in un loop di siderale malinconia shoegaze in “City Of Moving Clouds”, mentre gli episodi dominati dall’estro vocale di Dru si rivelano i più carichi di fascino: la title-track, tutta giocata su vocalizzi dal respiro antico e su linee melodiche sottili, e “Seconds Before Sunrise”, dove le basi eteree si sposano a meraviglia con una vocalità che evoca un misticismo squisitamente orientale. Le indiscusse capacità e la grande esperienza dei due nomi coinvolti fanno di A Waking Ghost Inside un lavoro ben riuscito (e scorrevole, nonostante la sua lunghezza) che, pur non ridefinendo i confini dei generi abbracciati, tiene alto il vessillo delle sonorità più eteree, sognanti e soavemente avvolgenti del versante ‘dark’. From Sounds Behind the Corner
Chiudete gli occhi ed entrate (camminando a ritroso agli inizi degli anni ’90) all’interno di un Hotel (Great Northern non sbagliate), sedate ad un tavolo ed attendete che il piccolo palco abbia la sua regina del momento.
Sul palco sale una bionda, cotonata ragazza americana tra piccoli picking di chitarra ed atmosfere rarefatte, si chiama Julee Cruise ed intonando “Nightingale” vi soddisfa nel suo mood etereo ma in un certo qual modo torbido, David Lynch è lì accanto, Laura Palmer è stesa sul greto di un fiume che attende un coroner, uno qualsiasi, non vede più, non sente più, non vive più.
Rimanete nel sogno ed al posto di Lulee Cruise ora salgono i Mercury’s Antennae, lui (Erick Schied) già con Translucia, lei (Dru Allen) incantevole voce di This Ascension e Mirabilis. Il mood rimane, i picking ‘wang’ determinano una sorta d’incanto tra lo shoegaze “Victorialand” ed il downtempo assente, quasi apatico, appena appena con levità ‘witchato’ nel suo pop di vita, morte, assenza emotiva, non del tutto…
Un esordio bellissimo: A Waking Ghost Inside è intriso di piacere e bellezza estatica, downtempi aggraziati con una forte componente melancolica, quel discreto dolore addominale che diviene tristezza, abbandono all’esistere, l’anticamera del dolore puro, a volte della morte, il tocco di un angelo (vocale) che lascia il proprio compito ad un altro angelo, nero e spietato, eppure nella dolcezza delle sedici tracce rimane ancora la possibilità di vita, di un ultima, definitiva, gioia.
Brani scanditi nei tempi dilatati, nella voce che senza fretta, senza potere di plagio, intona le sue belle sfumature cromatiche sugli accordi di chitarra abbondantemente orpellata di delay e riverberi, plettrate totali, corda a corda, nota su nota, “The Way You Purr” piange e ride, soffre e gode dell’essere bella così com’è senza voler essere altro che una canzone ben costruita, emozione forte che diviene la fiamma che cresce su sei corde prima di ghiaccio poi di fuoco.
Poi “Serenade For Falling Stars”… e tutto è Cosmo, tutto si sposta nell’etere più puro, quasi ambient, davvero una prova di valore ‘heavenly’ per il combo, che morde in “Agalia”, ci aiuta a sognare (dream-pop del più puro e perfetto) in “Elendil”, trasforma in notte e stelle i solchi di “Nepenthe”, conclude in una ballata onirica l’album nei tempi di nuovo dilatati sulle corde, sulla voce, sulle ritmiche digitali di “Le Chant Des Sirenes”.
Mercury’s Antennae, il combo perfetto per la giusta label: in Projekt shoegaze e dream-pop hanno vissuto l’epopea del post Cocteau Twins esaltandosi in tanti progetti, esaltando la scuola americana che più di tutte ha saputo far suo il pop onirico, A Waking Ghost Inside è il nuovo capitolo per rimanere ancora un po’ tra le lenzuola sino al Cosmo, diventare stella tra stelle, sognare luci di luci. -Nicola Tenani
