With their luscious blend of ambient pop, Chandeen’s sound is remarkable with a unique sense of tonal aesthetics, visual soundscapes and unequalled soundtrack-like density.
The band has taken their time to work on the new album Forever And Ever and the result has definitely been worth the wait: Forever And Ever is an epic dream pop masterpiece delivering its sound with buzzy electronics, much cathedral reverb, coloured filters, gorgeously warm vocoder effects, orchestrated strings and massive choir parts. Without any doubt, this is the most ambitious and emotional work that the band has ever done.
The album starts with the stunning synth-prog song “Popcorn On Blue Eyes”, inspired by the chill-inducing spirit of the underworld, followed by “Cloudy Canyon”, an electro-rock-score song with the fantastic vocals of Julia Beyer that evokes the high velocity feeling of a skydiving trip. “Wake Up, Starbuck” is an incredible and emotional high fidelity piece featuring the fantastic soprano vocals of Harald Löwy’s daughter Marlene. The lead single “The Wild Unknown” has a light-hearted playfulness, a sweep of the 80s, and is catchier than anything else Chandeen have done to date. The mellow and breathtaking piano part shows the bands wispy emotional core as well as the range of Harald Löwy’s great vocal work in the refrain and the peaceful epilogue.
In the album’s second half, Chandeen once more show their extraordinary talent for little symphonies (“What Lies Beneath The Sky”) that embody incredible melodies (“Invaded by Love,” “Mountains”) and an impossibly rich and detailed world of sound. In an astonishing stretch, the band collaborated with the fantastic Ghost Children Choir to produce a mood that embodies vital and intimate pleasures. In sharp contrast, “Paralysed” is a magnificent and melancholy song with warm and wide Daft Punk vocoder effects that illuminate its vocal tunes with a dark neon light. The Hollywood score sound of “Hermine’s Dream” and “Splendid Echo” shows Chandeen’s love for crisp, butterfly-like moments that are simultaneously deep, organic and full of warm ambient tunes.
Since 2007, the German band Chandeen have enjoyed international acclaim for their albums Teenage Poetry and Blood Red Skies.
Forever And Ever is clearly an uplifting and triumphant collection of splendid dream pop with epic widescreen synthesizer sounds that captures the band in an extended series of its most glorifying moments.

Vecchia gloria di quell’epoca in cui la dream-wave americana si collocava a due passi dallo status di fenomeno di massa, i Chandeen continuano da anni a sfornare dischi di pregevolissima quando non addirittura eccellente) fattura. Abbandonati già verso la fine del decennio Novanta i rigagnoli dark che caratterizzavano i primi momenti della loro espressione artistica, la band si è progressivamente ridotta fino a comporsi dei soli Harald Löwy e Julia Beyer, reinventatisi autori di un pop elettronico a cavallo tra i sogni eterei dei discepoli Autumn’s Grey Solace, le sincopi propulsive dei Mira più in palla e gli arpeggiatori battenti degli Aurora.
Una miscela che non a caso ha continuato a riscuotere un discreto successo negli Stati Uniti – dove quel malloppo “dark” che comprende gothic, ethereal e dream-wave non ha mai davvero smesso di costituire un fenomeno – per essere invece presto dimenticata in Europa, proprio a cominciare dalla natia Germania. C’è voluto lo zampino della Projekt perché Forever And Ever, disco numero undici in carriera, tornasse a gettare un po’ di luce su una realtà che ha proseguito, con caparbietà e discreto coraggio, la propria avventura anche dopo il declino dei tempi d’oro.
Quello che troviamo nel 2015 nei Chandeen è un sound maturo, deciso, sicuro di sé, improntato su un mix di synth pastosi e avvolgenti, chitarra acustica e la voce, conservata alla perfezione, di Julia Beyer. Li (ri)scopriamo in grado di partorire gemme come la languida “Paralysed”, la paradisiaca “Wake Up, Starbuck!”, la malinconica “What The Lies Beneath The Sky”, l’eterea “In Distant Sunset Light” e la languida e cinematografica “Hermine’s Dream”, con accompagnamento interamente affidato agli archi.
Ma poi anche l’anima più scoppiettante e vivace dei due sbuca fuori in una manciata di singoli che una decina d’anni fa avrebbero avuto un discreto potenziale da chart: dal battito sotterraneo che anima “The Wild Unknown” alla dolcezza forse un po’ tirata di “Invaded By Love” per arrivare al puro dance-pop di “Popcorn On Blue Eyes”, degna dei Metric più in palla, che un posto in qualche classifica statunitense potrebbe riuscire davvero a strapparlo. Impulsi vitali che riescono ad alleggerire la tracklist di un lavoro che trasuda nostalgia da ogni suo suono, ma che riconsegna un duo ancora in ottima forma a più di dieci anni dal suo periodo d’oro. -Matteo Meda
