Nature

Venturing into pristine musical terrain, flutist Peter Phippen and synthesist Ivar Lunde, Jr. reveal a magical album of dark secretive nocturnal soundscapes. Engaging mystery and textural sparseness, the six tracks unearth lush emotions entwined with inner stillness and self-discovery. These meditative moments are ideal for stress reduction and creating a positive mindset.

Phippen’s bamboo and wooden flute improvisations offer the seeds for composer Lunde, Jr. to weave ambient arrangements utilizing synthesizers, gongs, and wine glasses. This results in a natural flow of each artist’s feelings.

Time

The definition of time in music might be perceived as a fourth dimension of reality. Melodies and textures played during the conception and life span of each piece cause subtle tension and release, deep emotion, beauty, and at times harmonious apprehension within a peaceful calm.

Nature

Out of this world and otherworldly.

As a walk in the deep forest or immersion into the sacred, this music holds space for inner stillness in the midst of the cacophony and chaos bearing down on humanity and this precious planet.

Gigi Stafne, natural medicine writer, educator, and clinician at Green Wisdom School of Natural and Botanical Medicine writes:
Peter Phippen and Ivar Lunde, Jr. magically unfurl a path to other planes of existence. Each song on Primordial Forest evokes simple, sacred elements, tethering and signaling us to be present with, and to communicate with, the natural world and our ancestors. May this music pull you close, fine tune your energy and serve as a communication conduit with other worlds and ways of being. Let the journey begin…

    From Exposé
If the cover of Primordial Forest reminds one of a certain Edgar Froese album from the mid-70s, that may either be intentional or unintentional, it really matters not, because that’s where the similarities end, unless one is talking about the overall feeling that a piece of music provides for the listener. Peter Phippen is the soloist on these six wonderous pieces that evoke contemplation, inner stillness, and warmth in a classic meditative style; here he plays bamboo flutes, various Native American flutes and replicas thereof, edo, shakuhachi, Egyptian kawala, and various antique African flutes. He collaborates with Ivar Lunde, Jr. who contributes all manner of synthesizers, gongs, and wine glasses, in a supporting role much as he did on Galaxies in 2022.

This is a forest that a listener can easily get lost within, in fact one where a listener will want to get lost in pure introspective meditation, with the breath of life flowing through various flutes of the world while a backdrop of gentle synths and tuned percussion guides the listener through the inward spiral journey to sacred worlds where time seems to stand still, and though it seems to be over all too soon. These six pieces will last a good 45 minutes or more from beginning to end, but it’s a world where time doesn’t seem to exist, at least in any conventional way. For best results I would recommend listening to Primordial Forest in an endless loop, where each pass takes the listener closer to a dark and secret world that one can view, but never actually arrive at, which is fine — the journey is what it’s all about anyway; this is a beautiful soundworld full of deep emotions. -Peter Thelen

    From Solenopole

When we talk about music, it’s rare that the word “exploration” immediately comes to mind. However, the album Primordial Forest by Peter Phippen and Ivar Lunde Jr offers precisely this experience: a true exploratory musical adventure in virgin territory, rich in dark and secret soundscapes.

The duo transports us into a unique musical universe by mixing the improvisations of Peter Phippen, played on bamboo and wooden flutes, with the composing talents of Ivar Lunde Jr., who creates ambient arrangements with the help of synthesizers, gongs and wine glasses. The result is a subtle fusion of each artist’s emotions, generating a symphony of rich and deep emotions.

Much like a walk in the forest, the music on this album offers a space of peace and serenity amidst the cacophony and chaos of the contemporary world. It encourages contemplation and inner exploration, while inviting communion with nature.

The haunting charm of Primordial Forest is perfectly summed up by Gigi Stafne, natural medicine writer and educator, who describes the album as a path to other planes of existence. Each piece evokes sacred and simple elements, inviting presence and communication with the natural world. The music of Phippen and Lunde Jr. creates a connection, refines energy and opens doors to other worlds.

The album is released under the Projekt Records label, which is a pillar in the world of introspective and nomadic music. With a catalog that includes artists such as Steve Roach, Erik Wøllo, Michael Stearns, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Aurelio Voltaire, and many more, the label has continued to nurture the careers of exceptional artists for over 40 years.

Primordial Forest is a unique musical experience, a fascinating journey into the heart of consciousness and nature. He invites everyone to lose themselves in the mysteries of music and explore unknown sonic territory. May this music transport you to mysterious soundscapes and connect you with the depths of your own being. -Olivier Lehoux

From Paul Asbury Seaman at Bandcamp:

For the third year in a row, Peter Phippen makes my list of notable albums. This one—released on “Hallowed-Eve” of 2023 is an instant stand-out. No one does mysterious/mystical, earthy, timeless flute playing quite like Phippen. His carefully chosen collaborations, as here, help bring out the best of these qualities. As a frequent mix-maker (for Low Light Mixes on Mixcloud) I specialize in sleep and meditation programs. This album is such a program—by itself. Favorite track: Nightshade.

    From Dave Aftandilian at Bandcamp:

Thanks to Projekt’s recent releases, I have come to know and love Peter Phippen’s deeply emotive and introspective flute playing. Those traits are very much on display here, given additional warmth and immersive texture by Ivar Lunde, Jr.’s ambient treatments. Listening feels like watching purple twilight gently deepen into velvet night, as the world grows hushed and the stars begin to twinkle brightly in the infinite heavens. In this beautiful silence we can finally hear our inner voices.
