& Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance): Dziekuje Bardzo/Vielen Dank 3-CD

Dakini takes the celestial voice of filmmaker Lisa Hammer and layers it with drones, ragas, tribal drums and folk music to create a roller coaster of emotions: a cultural and spiritual mix of Indian, medieval and modern ambience. Dakini is a new revelation for the fans of Lisa’s previous work as vocalist for Mors Syphilitica & Requiem in White. A departure from tradition, an enlightened development in her musical path.

A dakini is an elusive tantric deity that might best be described as a female embodiment of enlightened energy - "she who traverses the sky" or "she who moves in space." She is also depicted as wrathful in that she cuts through human ego and ignorance with a vengeance. Her feminine powers are very strong: generally volatile or wrathful, though also seen as a muse (or inspirational thoughtform) for spiritual practice. Dakinis are energetic beings in female form, evocative of the movement of energy in space. In this context, the sky or space indicates the insubstantiality of all phenomena, which is, at the same time, the pure potentiality for all possible manifestations.

Lisa writes, "The intention behind this cd was to create music for ritual, meditation and sex. Ideally, all 3 at once. It was designed to carry the listener away from the manifest world and into a deeper space. The Indian ragas correspond with times of the day, so the CD represents a condensed 24 hours, which is perfect for ritual, or any emotional and spiritual trip. The medieval songs are matched with Indian ragas and tribal drums, Appalachian folk music, Middle-Eastern drones and opera to bring the four directions together, North South East and West. It's a cultural and spiritual mix, all blending together in one CD. Each of the songs has its own meditational/trance-inducing quality, regardless of its origin."

Lisa was once told by a great guru-poetess that she was a true dakini and should learn the ways of the dakini to develop her gift. Dakini is the result of continued studies and instruction: an audio journey to guide the listener toward contemplation, spiritual movement, and to break through obstacles. Dakinis, being associated with energy in all its functions, are linked with the revelation of the Higher Tantras, which represent the path of transformation. Here, the energy of negative emotions or kleshas, called poisons, are transformed into the luminous energy of enlightened awareness or gnosis.

    A review from Bliss Aquamarine:
Solo album from vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Hammer, also known for her work with Mors Syphilitica and Requiem in White. Inspired by the Tantric concept of the Dakini, it was Lisa's intention for this album to create music for ritual, meditation and sex. The music is a meeting of ancient and modern, with 12th century hymns set to stark ambient soundscaping, and sitar-laden Eastern mystical chants combined with electronic and experimental music. The Valley of Unrest sets Edgar Allen Poe's words to a superb ethereal melody and arrangement with angelic choral backing vocals. Yaksha combines frenetic tribal drumming with that slightly atonal modern classical music and otherworldly wordless vocals. Sometimes with dark, unsettling undercurrents, but always deeply atmospheric and imaginative.

    A review from Darkroom Magazine:
Gli stilemi etnici s'impongono a più riprese, come nella mistica "Samsara", fra le magiche melodie di "Vajra", nell'oscura "Mara" o nella misteriosa "Electric Tamboura", ma l'album vive anche di eterea delicatezza, come dimostrano "Eleison", "Be Not Afraid", "The Valley Of Unrest", "The Muses", "Bardo" e "The Saddest Day Of All". - Roberto Alessandro Filippozzi. Rating : 7/10

    A review from Grave Concern:
As a longtime fan of Lisa's from her Mors Syphilitica days to her latest solo release. Lisa's voice is beautiful as always and she crosses over into an ethnic sound. Lisa's approach is gentle and ethereal. Dakini is a departure for Lisa that succeeds in channeling other worlds and sounds. "Yaksha" is a delightful trance-like dance with sound, and movement. Lisa's newest effort is effortless and chants messages from all time and place. Dakini is a moving meditation of sound and show cases Lisa's limitless talent. - Jules Cohen

A review from New Age Retailer:
Adequately capturing Lisa Hammer’s Dakini in words would vex any reviewer. Comparisons to Dead Can Dance, Enya and Loreena McKennitt are obvious, but that doesn’t begin to capture the special magic that Hammer (on keyboards, piano, dulcimer, bass, woodwinds, harp, synths, and more), assisted by three accompanists, unleashes on the CD’s heady mixture of Latin, English and wordless vocals combined with ethnic, dark ambient, world fusion and gothic music. Propulsive dynamism coexists with the sublime and ethereal, yet the strength of the artist’s singular artistic vision presents a unified front. Dakini is a special, unique listening experience aimed at those who hunger for music that is deep, profound and captivating. - Bill Binkelman
