As I write this, Shikhee’s spending her time at the “Icebox,” her studio and refuge, finishing up a new release, Stripped and Stitched, for Projekt. It features remixes from The Dividing as well as some acoustic tracks. People who’ve been to any recent Android Lust shows might’ve been surprised to see her, at the end of the set, strap on an acoustic guitar and perform one last song, “Sin,” sans synth. Android Lust unplugged. Because she is deftly able to lose herself in the song, and take the audience with her, she usually gets her loudest applause with this number. The feelings are real, from the early wrathful cries of “Refuse”(from Resolution) to the battle-scarred but hopeful pronouncements of “Unbeliever”(from The Dividing) she relives these moments of pain, hurt and rage as if it were happening anew and you’re a witness to it all. Musically the Android Lust sound has expanded over the years to be virtually all-inclusive, often sacrificing the 16th note staples of EBM to embrace whatever works, be it guitar (from acoustic to thrash), viola, flute or more high tech options. Shikhee is a gearhead too, her “Icebox” studio runs on the latest MOTU system, soft and hardware synths and samplers (for a list go to androidlust.com). She utilizes the best of the old and the new. Her writing technique for instance: many electronic songwriters do not write linearly, sort of an adaptation to how the early sequencers ran in endless loops. Android Lust is one of those few dark electro acts that really stand out and have developed a sound of their own. Don’t expect any cheesy, easy listening dancefloor hits from this project. Most tracks are too difficult for the dancefloor. The rhythms and structures are too daring and the tracks aim at emotional impact not at club play. Stripped & Stitched is a compilation album with a few remixes, a couple of acoustic versions of older songs and also some new tracks. The new songs are ‘Drown’ and ‘Sin’. ‘Drown’is a bit like Nine Inch Nails and new style I, Parasite. ‘Sin’ is a moody track that reminds me a bit of Delerium. Very nice are the acoustic versions of ‘Refuse’ and ‘Burn’, both are very atmospheric.The highlight of the album is the remix version of ‘Another Void’. Like the original it is a wonderful track that redefines dark electro music. It is suitable for the dancefloor, but you can only dance to it when you already know the track. Again Android Lust proves to be one of the most innovative and original dark electro acts of the contemporary scene.
Android Lust’s soul, the Bangladesh born spitfire known as Shikhee, has brought us some of the most innovative music we have seen in decades in the last few years. Android Lust’s very name has become synonymous with excellence and Stripped & Stitched solidifies that. Containing remixes and acoustic versions of Android Lust songs from The Dividing and Resolution as well as tracks from The Want and some new material this CD is absolutely stunning in its intensity. While Android Lust’s music runs the gamut of emotions, the remixes on Stripped & Stitched seem intimately intense…even more so than was accomplished on The Dividing. Songs like Drowned, Kingdom of Ones (remixed by Dark Vision Media’s I, Parasite) and the acoustic rendition of Refuse almost make me noticeably uncomfortable as I sit here writing this. It’s almost as if Shikhee is standing in front of you with her chest ripped open and she is forcing you to look inside. It’s a gruesome site but it’s so real and so honest and so raw and so passionate that you can’t help but be fascinated.
The remixes here are great but with names like I, Parasite, Monstrum Sepsis, Occulttechnologies, and Entropy though you should see that coming. The new songs are even better than what was offered up on The Dividing. It’s in the acoustic renditions though, in my opinion, that the true soul of Stripped & Stitched is discovered. I would love to hear an acoustic based album by Android Lust. In a world filled with Dave Matthews clones I had almost forgotten how intense and pure acoustic based music could be. Thankfully Shikhee has redefined it. This is an essential album, no questions asked. While many remix albums are either a rip off or leave you wanting more, Stripped & Stitched stands firmly on its own 2 feet. - Mark FisherKey Tracks: Drown, Refuse (Acoustic)
