With Sue Hutton's background in Indo-Bulgarian-Celtic style vocals, and world percussion, and Jim Field's past from industial-experimental, to hard-core bands, the two seemed an unlikely pair to hook up as a song-writing team. However, the wrathful Greek Goddess Rhea is the daughter of extremes, the sun and the earth. Merging extremes - masculine and feminine, intensity and serenity - this is the premise of the band Rhea's Obsession. Bringing the extremes of music together in one band.
Sue and Jim came together initially in '95 to score a soundtrack to an experimental dance film called TABULAE ANATOMACAE SEX, blending their hybrid of distorted drones and wailing vox over heavy percussion and grooves. The soundtrack was met with such success, Rhea's Obsession started her tribal-mystical-moody-dark journey into sound from there. Film soundtracks were a jump-start for the band.
This first film they scored was bought by Canada's MUCH MUSIC/BRAVO tv, and went into regular rotation across Canadian television shortly thereafter on MUCH MUSIC's sister station BRAVO television. This station subsequently hired Rhea's Obsession to score 3 more pieces for television. With the success of the duo's writing efforts, Jim and Sue continued on with Rhea's, and self-released a full length record early 1996, called INITIATION, which has begun to achieve them success in the underground scene, as they formed a live band and began to tour.
'96 and 97 saw Rhea's rise through Canadian college charts, topping the annual "BEST of 1997" at Canada's biggest campus radio station. INITIATION was the highest rotation album for the year, having airplay equally on the alternative, open format, new age, experimental, and goth-industrial shows.
On the strength of this new record, word spread about the duo's tribal-soundscapes, and television series LA FEMME NIKITA licensed 2 tracks from INITIATION, which led to world-wide tv syndication for Rhea's in the soundtrack, plus they have played the television series convention 2 years in a row, and have established a loyal following amongst the Nikita fans. One of the tracks has become a theme of Nikita, and is used in television ads for the show on the USA NETWORK. Work also came with director George Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) on a MISFITS video, and the director became a fan of the band. Dan Ackroyd's paranormal series PSI FACTOR, a Canadian series on CBC, and have just recently been hired to score more music for MUCH MUSIC.
