Fear Falls Burning
The Infinite Sea of Sustain (Audio DVD)

Fear Falls Burning - a cross between the looping of Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfooting and the power dynamics of Sunn O)))

Track Listing:
None
Total Length: 74 minutes

vidnaObmana’s alter ego directed in dedication to the expansive tonal character of the electric guitar and to avoid obvious and easy comparisons with vidna's existing works and projects. real-time performances on the electric guitar without post-productive editing or additional overdubs in relation to vintage and contemporary guitar pedal effects. through the unique wiring of these guitar pedal effects, its single performed guitarchord multiplies and shifts over time into dense and trance-inducing walls of sound. Due to an ongoing fascination for tube and old transitorradio-like mono sounds, the electric guitar is performed in such a way with the help of the various vintage and replica effects that the music sounds deliberately old and monotonous. all clicks, ticks and cracks are part of the real-time performance, it's that fine musical line where lo-fi, instrumental post-rock, avant-garde, experimental and industrial meet...

first by a whisper, then by a storm is Fear Falls Burning’s unofficial tour CD in the light of a series of introduction concerts and the - to be released - first full-length album. the CD features outtakes from this forthcoming debut album.

references and influences are Richard Pinhas, Landing, Sunn O))), Robert Fripp, Earth, Morton Feldman, Circle, Windy & Carl and The Necks.

Fear Falls Burning is on an European tour throughout 2005.

A review from Mashnote.net
Fear Falls Burning is Vidna Obmana's Dirk Serries new alter ego. The purpose of this new identity is to explore the possibilities of the guitar and its tonal character through the use of pedals, etc. The result could be compared to contemporary drone & minimal ambient acts like Growing and even Sunn o))). The sounds vary from gritty dirty guitarloops to long sonical landscapes with dense walls of sound. "Reverb" and "Loops" are keywords in the Fear Falls Burning storyboard. And there were no overdubs or post-production effects involved, so the compositions progress in an organic and natural way. That aspect provides the listener an experience which could be trance-like if you let it be. These 8 tracks are an excellent prefiguration of his upcoming live shows; # 3 being my favorite with its enthralling climax. Highly recommended. - Jim

A review from Metal-Only.com
Fear Falls Burning is a new project by the man behind vidnaObmana, Dirk Serries, and First By A Whisper, Then By A Storm is the first release. This is however just a tour CD for the upcoming tour, the official debut "He Spoke In Dead Tounges" won't see the day of light until sometime in the summer. Already in the info sheet that I got with this album it's mentioned that Fear Falls Burning shouldn't be compared to the material vidnaObmana has released, which becomes obvious when you start listening to the music. The only parallels you can draw are on the atmospheric level, since the music belongs to a different category, a category that is far from easy to describe in words. Dirk calls it vintage guitar drones and the musical line where lo-fi, instrumental post-rock, avant-garde, experimental and industrial meet. I'm happy with this description, since I can't really come up with a better way to shortly describe this at least said special music. Guitar is the only instrument being used, which with a number of different effects create an atmospheric and monotonous soundscape with a dreamlike and eerie feeling in it, and it's really easy for the listener to float away within it. The dragging tempo that the music proceeds with increases this feeling and the similarities to various drone bands like SUNN O))) are present, but this is in some way more minimalistic and has a different kind of atmosphere. The fact that all of this is recorded live without any alterations afterwards gives even more of a special feeling and soul to the music. The album is divided into eight tracks, of which all are nameless and can very well be seen as one single whole. Yet the change-over between the different tracks could have been done more even so that the overall feeling would be better preserved when listening through the album. Fear Falls Burning is not a band for everybody, since the music is quite special. If atmospheric music is your thing, you should however definitely check out First By A Whisper, Then By A Storm since this is really good. Now it's just the impatient wait for the debut that lies ahead and to hope that one sometimes gets the chance to see this live, something that definitely would be a unique experience.

A review from Groove Unlimited
Never heard of Fear Falls Burning? No problem. First By A Whisper, Then By A Storm is his first CD.

He is, as Fear Falls Burning is no one less than Dirk Serries, our man behind Vidna Obmana. After twenty more years of dabbling around with the complexities of ambient music, it was about time that Dirk Serries tried a different tune, and maybe one that is less complex.

Dirk plays guitar on his side project, which he feeds through a whole bunch of effect boxes, but no synthesizers or fancy laptops. Everything on this CD is played live, without any overdubs or other studio wizardness. Although this is far away something that deals with ambient music, it's actually much more postrock, in all its stretched out monotonous approach but with some of the distortion. It's also a bit 'dirty,' this sound. Earth or Sunn 0))) spring to mind in these pieces, along with Stars Of The Lid meet Windy & Carl. Maybe not every track is great, and some tension is lacking here and there, this is actually a most promising start, and since this is sold as the 'unofficial' tour CD, it means Fear Falls Burning can be seen shortly, in your area too.

At least if you live in Europe, since that's where he is going first. -Vital / FdW
