A review from Ad Arma
NEST 9 / 13 ... This is ethereal music, having much more to do with ambient and acoustic world than any kind of loud rock or things close to that. Calm, emotional, gloomy, dreamy, sometimes monumental but usually serene and focused on all things simple and naturally flowing. Synth is not the only instrument, though very important. But A. Tolonen who is the mastermind behind Nest uses another mean to transmit his creative ideas through as well Finnish kantele, which is as important as synthesizer, and perhaps causes and results in a biggest charm of this project. It is arguable of course if this debut album is so neat and steady in its entirety, as it has better and worse material, but talking just about the idea and its realization it deserves the attention. I wonder how it would have sounded minus kantele, but guess then it must have been quite typical Mortiis/Burzum wannabe, roughly speaking. Thanks to liner notes, Ive learned that there are even attempts to distort the string instrument of course it sounds a bit weird but worth a try in Summer Storm. I wonder what if big or any are the differences between Finnish kantele and our traditional kankles. It is an instrument of the same kind, just with local characteristics. And few Metal bands over here tried to use it. Nest experience is different, this musician is more worried about how to use kantele with dreamy artistry, how to make it work as independent musical experience and not a usual accompaniment. Biography helps a bit mentioning Tenhi yes, this has a close feeling to it, except vocal parts that are either narrated or entirely whispered here. Take a glimpse. This music has a potential to grow, at least.
