Lush, medieval folk
Unto Ashes have received international recognition for its breathtaking hybrid of ancient and modern instrumentation, exquisite songwriting and superb vocal performances. Inspired by early Dead Can Dance, Coil and This Mortal Coil, the band is now championed as the leading exponent of this genre. Unto Ashes effortlessly extend the threads initiated by these now-defunct projects, meticulously weaving them into a sound that is truly unique: mystical, magickal, ethereal, gothic, neo-classical, obscure, ancient, experimental, sublime, dark and magnificent. Indeed, the music of Unto Ashes has been heralded as all of the above. In a review of Unto Ashes’ previous album Saturn Return a typically verbose critic was rendered practically speechless; upon recovery he simply proclaimed: “This CD transcends music!”
Empty Into White contains an unbroken ring of beautiful and powerful songs and stark soundscapes. In the face of the Apocalypse, the new album encompasses an even wider range of emotions, featuring original plague dances on medieval instruments, grim apocalyptic folk, songs of Witchcraft, and some spectacularly vibrant tracks which incorporate Persian and Oriental instrumentation. Distinguished by a wide array of exotic instruments, such as hurdy-gurdy, dulcimer, Persian saz, tamboura, violin, tabla, and hypnotic percussion, Empty Into White is even more ancient and innovative than its two predecessors.
