Long thought to be out of print, we have been able to nab some copies of this Ltd. Edition Hyperium CD. Deluxe Packaging features a nice Digi-Pak design. Recorded live in Rennes on October 22, 1994.
Here is the interview that you can find inside the box of the CD
"I do not accept it when someone says our music is elitist. The fact is that we don't reach a lot of people since there is not a lot of advertising for our records. Anyone listenning to one of them acts, most of all, like a discoverer. But we never meant to make music for an elite. We want it to be very simple".
RISE & FALL OF A DECADE is made of normal people who take a great pleasure in playing, they don't want to live from their music, but for it. It all began one day of 1988 when Sandy joined Pierre-François and Thierry who were rehearsing. She sang on "Galdopiggen Glitterind" (which became the first song of the band). This song, with two others, appeared in 1989 on the third volume of the UNRELEASED SAMPLERS; surely one of the most important reference in the French underground music of the late 80's.
Of course, I asked the band what RISE & FALL OF A DECADE meant. they laughed and explained that one day Pierre-François opened the dictionnary at random and found 'Rise and Fall', then Thierry thought that 'Of a Decade' sounded great!!.
Thierry and Sandy are composing all the melodies, Pierre-François is writing the lyrics. When Thierry presents a melody it has to be adopted within 5 minutes to become the chorus. Every tune the band likes is kept until they got 12 pieces to make an album. They are not finding inspiration in any particular place, everything they want is to make music whole heartedly. The lyrics are written in 10 minutes, always after the melody, and often in a rush. "The hardest is to find a thema". 10 + 5 = 15 minutes to write a song ? in fact RISE & FALL OF A DECADE is working very hard, it takes 9 full months to finish an album.
Except for the very first song and the Black Sessions (broadcasted on Radio France and issued as a Mini-CD "An evebing with Bernard"), they are recording everything in their own studio UNITY MITFORD, where they also produced Planet Zen, Trees Dance and Speaking Silence.
They covered songs from Serge GAINSBOURG, the famous chanteur et poète and also from THE CLASH and PIXIES. "We are covering song of artists who do not sound like us and we try to re-arrange them totally. Guns of Brixton, for example, is only for live perfomances, most of the time people do not recognize it" (did you dear listener? and by the way, did you notice that Thierry broke a string on 'Mistake'?).
"We are not doing a lot of concert but we think it is enough. We never looked for any live opportunity, we have always been invited and we never refused one. That's why we are very happy to meet the same people since we are often playing in the same places".
They do not consider to hold any image, in concert they want to be as much live as possible only playing guitares, bass & drums without any machines or smoke effect. "We act on stage as we do in the every day life : there is a gap between what people think we are and what we really are : we know how to enjoy life". "How could we make albums and say things if we were not part of the society ? We are adressing ourself to people having a normal live so we don't imagine ourself doing it if we weren't having a normal live".
