Peter Ulrich is the former drummer/percussionist of Dead Can Dance and a past contributor to 4AD's This Mortal Coil. Unsurprisingly, his debut solo album on Projekt is very strong rhythmically, demonstrating an array of ethnic and early music influences. Superimposed onto this backdrop now come Ulrich's own haunting melodies, poetic lyrics and vocal style. Add to this some inspired arrangement and production from DCD's Brendan Perry and long-time 4AD/Beggars Banquet collaborator John A Rivers, and the result is a pure delight.

Pathways and Dawns has been described by Alternative Press as the album the Beatles might have made "had they signed with 4AD instead of Capitol," and by Lexicon as "a wonderful collection of songs that, while in the 4AD school, shimmers with an inner lightness that makes it very different from any other 4AD album." It has also been favourably compared with Brian Eno (Alternative Press and Mojo), Syd Barrett (Ink Nineteen), Japan, Depeche Mode and Tones On Tail (Mojo), and mentioned in the same breath as luminaries such as John Cale and Jah Wobble. Etch magazine found a "sense of majesty and mystery is conveyed through all tracks" and concluded that "this is a great release for fans of Dead Can Dance and other Projekt records."

Three full tracks from the album are available to hear and/or download at mp3.com, an extensive interview with Peter is currently available at the official Dead Can Dance Website , and Peter can be contacted through his own website - linked above. The track 'Life Amongst the Black Sheep', taken from Pathways and Dawns, features on Projekt's Orphée compilation.
