Metcalf, Byron
with Steve Roach: The Shaman's Heart

Roach, Steve
& Byron Metcalf / Mark Seelig: Mantram

Roach, Steve
& Byron Metcalf / Mark Seelig: Nada Terma ~ SALE $5

Like the mysterious caves portrayed on its cover, The Serpent's Lair is an opening to an alluring and intense underworld.

In many shamanic traditions, the snake or serpent is viewed with sacred reverence. The serpent primarily symbolizes the process of "death and rebirth." As the serpent sheds its skin, leaving behind that which is outgrown or no longer of use, it quietly prepares to move into a "new life." This is a vulnerable period during which the snake is left defenseless against outside threats with no guarantee of survival. For the shamanic initiate, this type of challenge must be faced if one is to "step into" this new relationship to life.

Beginning as a collaboration between Roach and Metcalf, the music on The Serpent's Lair evolved over the past year into an epic 2-CD set, augmented with a myriad of guests. For those familiar with Roach's work, this release has it all. Steve's ultra-soundworlds, hybrid grooves and magical production combined with Byron's acoustic-organic tribal trance patterns set disk 1 in motion (in all directions). Aligning with themes of shamanic initiation found throughout the world, this disc is rooted in the organic . . . the earth . . . the ancestors . . . and the initiatory energy of focused transformational ritual practice which is integrated into the alchemical fire of psycho-spiritual death and rebirth. It is here that one is confronted with all the essential elements of danger and possibility.

Disk 2 -- subtitled "Offerings To The Underworld" -- is built around musical elements from disc 1, yet forges a sonic alchemy as it dives deeper. Thought at times rhythmic, the overall feeling is a floating, pulsing, breathing adventure through a system of underground rivers and caves, inspiring fantastic epsiodes along the way.

Guests on The Serpent's Lair include Vicki Richards, Vidna Obmana, Jeffrey Fayman, Momodou "Mohammad" Kah, Jorge Reyes, Jim Cole, Lena Stevens and Vir Unis.

Just like the Shamanic initiate who journeys within to find his source of power and transformation - like the Serpent shedding its skin - in our contemporary society, we too can choose the path of personal transformation. Such is the way of this shamanic lesson.

about the artists

Steve Roach is restless in his search for new sounds that connect with an ancient source of truth in this constantly changing world. His unique approach and the psychological / spiritual depth of his music have established his position as an artist of ceaseless productivity, constant innovation and open-minded collaborations with others. For over two decades, Roach has created cornerstone recordings that defy classification including Structures from Silence, Dreamtime Return, Well of Souls, and Midnight Moon. With this essential new offering, Roach brings the momentum of his rich career to another level.

Byron Metcalf is a drummer/percussionist, psychologist, and shamanic practitioner specializing in methods which utilize non-ordinary (altered) states of consciousness to assist people in healing, personal growth and transformation. This collaboration began with Steve assisting Byron in a formal research study designed to examine the effects of breathwork and sound as a shamanic strategy. Steve and Byron's unique skills in using music and sound to induce altered states of consciousness proved to be an incredibly powerful and potent combination which they explored in different forms throughout this release.

A review from Alternative Press:
Shamanic journey through a serpentine labyrinth of rebirth spans two discs
Steve Roach's unique soundquests continue to take him and his listeners on haunting journeys to worlds at once alien and familar. On The Serpent's Lair, a sort of genetic deja vu gives rise to ancient memories of forgotten lives in parallel universes. The serpent symbolizes death and rebirth, and in shedding its skin, it risks death to attain new life. It is the path of transformation that must be faced in order to ascend to a higher level of being. In league with percussionist Byron Metcalf, Roach and guest artists including Vicki Richards, Vidna Obmana, Vir Unis, Jeffrey Fayman, and Jorge Reyes have created the sonic equivalent of shamanic ascension. There's a pleasing melodic thread creeping into Roach's work of late, producing a kind of positive coalescence, most distinctively heard in "Big Medicine" on disc one. The second disc delves even deeper into the dark reaches of the serpent's world, finding powerful sources for healing, growth and exploration. Overall, The Serpent's Lair is another masterwork of trancey layers of synth breathing through a dancing skeleton of tribal rhythms, rattles and woodwinds.

A review from Ambient Visions:
If you like drumming and percussion (as I do), then this large-scale, rhythm-filled double CD album is for you. The veteran electronic guru Steve Roach teams up with shamanic percussionist Byron Metcalf and numerous other instrumentalists and vocalists to create a sonic panorama of the shamanic experience. Shamanism is perhaps the world's first spiritual tradition, sometimes defined as an "archaic technique of ecstasy" which uses drumming, chanting, and (in many instances) psychedelic drugs to achieve other states of consciousness. The Serpent's Lair offers listeners a drug-free way to get a glimpse of the shaman's world.

In a way, Steve Roach's work has been about shamanism for at least the last 20 years; he's been influenced by this ancient way throughout his career, especially since he set up his Timeroom in Arizona and worked with Aboriginal and Native American music. And in true new-millennium fashion, he pairs the futuristic song of the synthesizer with primal, tribal sounds. Roach describes his work on this album as "groove alchemy," "atonal atmos," "elastic electric grooves," and "lair atmospheres." All this creative wordplay more or less describes electronic manipulation of percussion rhythms, whether through textural filters, vast reverberations, echoes, looping, layering, and other forms of electronic magic. This is what you will hear throughout the album. The first CD, titled "The Serpent's Lair," consists of hard-driving drum rhythms, tied together at times by Steve's floating synthesizer lines, and other times sinking into those "atonal atmo(spheres)" that Roach has been working with lately.

The second CD, "Offerings from the Underworld," is less drum-oriented and more electronic; it, too, features rhythms but they are subordinated to the electronics. They range from the railroad-rush of the first track, "Offering in Waves," to the thudding, low-filtered "melted Metcalf groove alchemy" of track 4, "Primal Passage." In my opinion the best piece on this set, and perhaps the best on the whole album, is the 23-minute track 3, "Cave Dwellers," which originated in a live jam of Steve Roach and Jorge Reyes. This evocation of primeval ritual, complete with wordless Native-inspired chanting, starts slow and builds in speed and volume to a burning intensity in its last few minutes.

The very last track, "Ochua," occupies the last-in-the-set position reserved for a "sweeter" piece on a Roach album. With its crooning female voice and soft electronic accompaniment, it is designed to "cool down" the listener after the strenuous session that has just taken place. There is a distant rumble of shamanic rhythm in the piece as well, the fading echo of the storm that has just passed.

A review from MUZE:
Certainly the year 2000 hasn't seen the elder statesman of electronic music slow down in the slightest. On the contrary, Roach ushered in the new millennium with some of the most personal, evocative and finest recordings of his long career, this collaboration with Byron Metcalf being just one of them. The Serpent's Lair finds Roach revisiting the primordial caverns and aeon-blasted landscapes of his seminal mid-90s adventures, only this time, the sonic alchemist has > embroidered these rhythmic trance-dances with not only Metcalf's percussive expertise, but a further evolved sense of soundsculpting richer and more intense than even his previous excursions into the sonic wild. This beautifully-packaged two-disc set also utilizes the stellar talents of Vir Unis, Jorge Reyes, Jeff Fayman and Vidna Obmana as our intrepid duo excavate pure sensory nirvana out of their aural chemical devices. Roach's concept of 'groove alchemy', the extreme way in which sounds are ultimately condensed, interwoven and reintegrated during the studio-mixing process, fairly dissolves the speaker fabric during the omnipotent electro-opus "Cave Dwellers" and the mysterious, mind-burst miasma cooked up on "Egg Chamber Dreaming." Turn out the lights, tune in, close your eyes and prepare for altered states.

A review from Napra Review Magazine:
Following his AFIM award winning Light Fantastic, Steve Roach returns to the studio with shamanic and trace drummer Byron Metcalf to create one of the best ambient electronic album of the year. The first CD of this two part, two disc opus is filled with tribal drums, droning didgeridoos, djembes, and lots of shakers and rattles. The second disc creates a different ambience, mostly without the drumming and shakers, and includes three supernatural settings by Roach. "Offerings in Waves" is reminicent of the high energy of Roach's Body Electric. "Impending Sense of Calm" exudes the peace and minimalism od deep space, as synth waves are punctuated by netherworld echoes. Other tracks feature the shamanic chants amd droning overtone voices akin to Tuva throat singers. The Serpent's Liar is a masterpiece of surreal and futuristic electronic creations juxtaposed with ancient drums and vocal textures. - Ted Cox
