Since 1996 Arcana has been one of the leading bands in the neoclassical genre. Peter Bjärgö (then Pettersson) created the music of Arcana after years of playing different kinds of music. The music was based on the romantic image of the middle ages as seen through Peter's eyes.  For the first three Arcana albums, Peter was joined by Ida Bengtsson as lead female vocalist, and the band grew its fan base worldwide. After the band's fourth release, Peter left Cold Meat Industry, Arcana's original label, to start his own label. This was mainly to preserve the personal touch of the music, Peter’s own sound and feelings, as well as his creative independence. At this time Ida left the band, Ann-Mari Thim became the new female vocalist, and Stefan Eriksson contributed keyboard and additional instruments. In 2003 Peter's wife, Ia Bjärgö, also joined the band as choir, and in 2006 Peter’s old friend Mattias Borgh entered the band as percussionist.  

Beginning as a solo project, the band is now a quintet, although the man behind it all is still Peter Bjärgö as composer and producer of the music. In 2006 Arcana signed to the German label Kalinkaland Records, an excellent fit for the music of Arcana as well as the person behind the music.
